How to Style: Dining Table for Everyday Living

There isn’t much advice on how to style your dining table by mainstream designers. In most Singaporean households, the dining space is usually the dumping ground for our unopened mails, keys, stationeries and if you’re living with kids, their homework. It becomes a bit of a “life wasteland” and the space doesn’t get enough attention because that might cause more work to maintain on top of our already busy schedules.

Adopting a new lifestyle habit takes time. Perhaps this is the moment to take control of the mess on your tabletop and cultivate an organized, beautiful space to wine and dine. Don’t underestimate what a splash of greenery or a decorative tray can do to lift the mood, especially if you’ve been working from home, joining Zoom meetings from your dining table. We believe that your home is your happy place - every nook, cranny, and surface should be designed to bring you joy, even when you’re not hosting.

Here’s Picket&Rail’s foolproof guide to style your tabletop for everyday living.

Floral or greenery statement

A vase or two, both tall and small, filled with beautiful blooms or green leafy branches will bring colour and life to your dining space. You can purchase fresh florals weekly for a slightly different vibe, but feel free to opt for a lower maintenance potted plant as long as your room gets the right amount of light to keep it alive. As older trends are coming back in popularity, dried baby breaths and pine cones can also be displayed in a rustic bronze pitcher for a vintage romantic touch without too much colour.

Prefer something simple? Go faux. Get a bunch of these ceramic succulent pots for a bright and playful appearance without the hassle.

Dining vignette

A stylish dining vignette can be easily created with a set colour palette. Scandinavian design has an easy formula to mix monotonous colours with natural tones and simple forms that blend well in any home. Repurpose a cutting board or purchase a designer tray as a base, then find little trinkets or items that relate to the dining space such as trivets, coasters, candles or salt and pepper grinders to set up a stylish arrangement.

Plus, it makes it easy to move everything in one go!

Display the fruits of your labour

Are you a high tea connoisseur or a skilled confectioner at home? Display the fruits of your labour with pride whenever you have friends over or simply a snack tray in between breaks. These industrial pedestal plates with a glass dome are a perfect functional centrepiece, keeping your snacks fresh for longer.

To truly replicate the high tea experience at home, presentation is key. This iron branch 2-tiered glass tray donned with two golden birds is great for delicacies, accessories or candles according to the occasion. No more hiding it in the cupboard for special events when it can be fully utilised all year round.

Odd numbers, always

Did you know? Items arranged in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7 etc) are more visually appealing. This idea is especially great for larger tables to fill up space, especially if it feels bare and unfinished. Make sure to space things out so that it looks well thought-out from all perspectives and doesn’t end up looking like a bargain corner. Three candle holders in varying heights or a trio of vases are great options to consider.

Tip: For an effortless decor, mixing high and low items can form a casual cluster in the middle of the table and still look appealing, but items of the same height are recommended to be lined up neatly parallel to the length or width for smooth visuals.
