Ways To Remove Candle Wax That Works

The adage reduce, reuse and recycle can be applied to our candle jars once the wax has been melted down. As a sustainable family furniture brand, we advocate for reducing waste and creative ways to decorate your home that truly expresses your taste.

To remove the waxy mess in your candle jar, you don't need special tools or lots of time. Patience and a kitchen goes a long way. Here are 4 methods to remove candle wax that will surely work, for jars of all shapes and sizes.

1. Freeze method

Wax hardens and shrinks in cold temperatures. First, use a butter knife to break up large chunks of wax, then place it in the freezer for several hours until it is frozen. The wax should pop right out of the container, but if it doesn't just use the same knife to loosen it out at the edges. Scrape off any residue and clean the jar with soap and water.

 2. Boiling Water Method

One of the most popular methods, great for oddly shaped jars. First, have a protective layer (cloth, coaster) under the jar. Use a butter knife to loosen the wax edges. Pour boiling water into the container, leaving room at the top. The melted wax will float to the top. Let the water cool and you can remove the wax easily. Strain the water, scrape off any residue and clean the jar with soap and water.

3. Oven Method

This is the trick if you have several jars to clean. Heat the oven to 48 - 82°C and line a baking tray with aluminium foil or baking sheet. Place the candle upside down and slide it into the oven. The wax will melt in 15 minutes. Hold the jar with heatproof gloves and wipe the insides with a kitchen towel. Let the jar cool, scrape off any residue and clean the jar with soap and water.

4. Double Boiler Method

The most mess free method. Place the candle in the middle of a large pot or bowl on a heat proof surface. Pour boiling water around the jar and let it sit for 10 minutes or more until the wax has softened. Use a butter knife to loosen the wax edges and it should pop right out. Scrape off any residue and clean the jar with soap and water.
